Take the Time to Vote for Your Business Goals

Election Day is here, and just like the candidates have goals for their (possible) upcoming term, it’s also a great time for you to start thinking about personal goals. Everyone, regardless of who they are, what they do, and who they want to become, should have them. Goals are a great way to keep on course in this crazy path called “life.” There are various life categories that all of us have. One that majority of us have is career/business. This is where you close your eyes and think about your perfect career.

My approach is that I think about three long-term business goals that I want to achieve. Currently, I have the following three:

  • - Get my MBA
  • - Make X amount by 2014
  • - Write a book on technical writing

I break down my long-term goals into short-term ones that are doable. For instance, I want to get my MBA. In order to do this, I have to take the GMAT, apply for the business schools I really want to get into, and I have to think about how I’m going to pay for it. Within that, you want to think of the milestones you have to achieve in order to be on the right path to your goal, or lifetime dream.
For a document, you can create a schedule where you practically do the same thing of breaking out the big tasks into smaller chunks. After you break it down, you will realize that you can do it. It’s really easy, and you won’t have this overwhelming feeling that usually comes with the territory.
Life can only be what you make of it, so create a bucket list. Jot down all of the things you want to achieve and go for it.
