When I started this blog in 2008 (times flies when you’re having fun), I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do with it. Yes, I wanted to talk about writing, but I didn’t know to what extent. I was all over the place. One day I would talk about technical writing, and then I’d switch to some current social media event. I was also using this plugin that would bring in the interesting items from my Google Reader. It had no focus whatsoever. However, I kept going, and I slowly found what I wanted my blog to be about. I wanted it to have technical writing tips and articles that companies and individuals can use. I love what I write about. It’s the point that I sometimes smile to myself while I’m writing it. This is how it should feel when you are blogging. A sense of extreme elation.

Blog and keep blogging until you find your “aha” moment

You probably just started or are making plans to start. Just do it. Even if you aren’t sure what you want your blog to be about at first, you will eventually figure it out.

Attach some analytics and let people make the decision for you

I started noticing when I looked at Google Analytics, Feedburner, and Statcounter that people were more interested in one type of content over the other. I decided to give the people what they want.

Make sure your blog design works for your content

A corporate blog theme will not work for a blog focusing on photography, and vice versa. Really think about the type of design will work for your blog content. I’ve restructured my blog design a few times, and I finally settled for one with a minimalist feel that made the writing and images stand out.

The most important thing to remember is that the final decision rests with you. We are multi-faceted, and you want to be happy in all the parts in your life. Find what you are passionate about and blog. Eventually your passion will start attracting readers who share that with you.
