I have been seeing previews for that Sarah Jessica Parker movie “I Don’t Know How She Does It” being advertised whenever I turn the TV. My friends have always asked me “How in the world do you keep on top of things? You have so much going on?!”
I am a single mother of two school-aged kids who are in all sorts of extracurricular activities. Last year, I started a non-profit to bring awareness to binge drinking and alcohol poisoning after my sister passed away due to it. Finally, I have my technical writing career that I want to continue excelling in. The only way that I do all of this while still having time to have fun and relax is by being a black belt in time management.
One of the ways that I do this is by having a schedule and grouping similar tasks together. If you are a blogger, then you should have a blog schedule. If it weren’t for my blog schedule, then I’d probably never have time to write. It’s a great way to visually see that hey, I need to blog now.
I’m always a huge believer of starting from the top-down, so here are five ways to create a blog schedule you’ll believe in.
Choose a Tool and Stick to It
It doesn’t matter if you are using a physical planner, a web calendar, or any other type, select the one that is right for you and stick to it. For me, I use Google Calendar, and I put the topics as daily events. I have it as its own calendar, so I can color-code my calendar, and I can visually see that is my blog schedule.
Blogging Days
You want to think about the frequency that you want to blog. Some blogs posts at all hours of the day, while others post once a week. There are some that even post once a month. However, the less you blog; the longer and more in-depth your post should be. Select what days you will be blogging. You definitely want to check out analytical tools like GoogleAnalytics, Statcounter, and Feedburner so that you can see when people are visiting your blog. If you are a business blog, then maybe Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays work better. If you are a movie blog, then Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays might.
Weekly & Daily Themes
Having a weekly or daily theme can help you quickly structure your blog schedule. For me, I prefer a theme for each of my blogging days. However, I have always had weekly themes where I only discussed one topic. It’s really whatever works for you.
For instance, Mondays can be technical writing day; Wednesdays can be blogging day, and Friday can be proposal writing day. Quick and painless.
Fill Out Your Blog Schedule
You don’t have to follow the schedule 100% because what if something happens that day that you want to blog about ASAP? You can take the post you had structured that day and do some rearranging. Like most writers, I have a small notebook that I carry, so when I think about something, I can jot it down before I forget. I am THE most forgetful person. I’ll think about something, and then five minutes later, I can’t remember what it was. It’s like I’m living in a Memento world. Therefore, I have a running list of possible topics. At the end of the month, I start scheduling them for the next month.
Start Writing
The last step is to write your blog posts. If you want to make blogging even easier, then outline.
