Now that I’ve found my own non-profit organization, I now understand how valuable volunteers are. Without them, non-profits probably wouldn’t last a month. They help bring the knowledge and skills in areas that you are lacking. When I needed actors for my first public service announcement video, I found these two great actors. You don’t want to see me act. When I needed a logo that was something that Generation Y would embrace, I found this great graphic designer. One of the skills that non-profits are always looking for is writing. Writing is something that is inevitable. Non-profits need it for their copywriting and grant writing.
As I have said before, when I was in college, I began volunteering my writing services to different non-profit organizations throughout the U.S. I helped some with their press releases, brochures, and newsletter. For others, I wrote grants for them. I also wrote their web content. It really helped me to understand the basics for all the different types of writing areas that a business needs.
Volunteering is something that is for the social good, and selfishly, it can do you good as well.
