Everyone, regardless of who they are, what they do, and who they want to become, should have goals. Goals are a great way to keep on course in this crazy path called “life.” Writers, you should also add writing goals as something that you track when you are sitting down to write your life goals. It doesn’t matter if you are just writing articles, e-book, a book, a play, you should have goals. If you are really dedicated to your writing, consider having a writing plan, which is similar to a business plan. This is where you can plan out your writing path in a more long-term method. For me, if I didn’t have any goals, I probably wouldn’t have achieved half of the things that I have in my life. Goals keep you focused on the life that you want for yourself, so it should apply to your writing as well.
My approach is that I get a long-term goal. A long-term goal for me is usually longer than a year. After I come up with a good one, then I break it down into short-term goals that I have to complete in a month. Therefore, there could be 12 short-term goals for that one long-term one. It makes me feel that I can do it.
You can do this for a document that is longer than 50 pages or so. You can create a schedule where you practically do the same thing of breaking out the big tasks into smaller chunks. After you break it down, you will realize that you can do it. It’s really easy, and you won’t have this overwhelming feeling that usually comes with the territory.
Only you can ensure that you achieve your dreams, so start today!
