Whose Video Uploader Reigns Supreme?

After taking a few videos of my nephew’s recital on my Canon Powershot, I decided to upload them into Geni, Youtube, and Facebook. The only site that I had success uploading the five videos that I took was on Geni.com. Youtube and Facebook kept timing out on me. After a frustrating time trying to upload the videos, I decided to video tape my review of the three sites.  This was tested on a Macbook and Dell PC Laptop.

Geni.com is an online family tree where people can connect with family members. Families are able to upload pictures and videos, create forums, add name tags to photos, and create events. It’s a private site that only family members can access. Therefore, unlike Youtube and Facebook, one is not able to publish the videos for the world to see. A one minute video took 15 minutes to completely upload. It has a new plugin that functions like Mac applications. One is able to drag and drop to begin the upload.

Youtube, for those who have been living in a cave, is a video social networking site. With their upload, one is able to upload up to ten videos at the same time. It took me three hours to upload the same video that took 15 minutes to upload on Geni.com This is after the 10th time of trying because it kept timing out. I noticed that they have a beta video uploader that shows the status compared to the one currently in Youtube that doesn’t let you know what your progress is.

Facebook was the worst. It kept saying that the video uploaded, but then I would receive an email indicating that it didn’t. If I didn’t receive an email, it would stall. As you will see in the presentation, it uploaded a five-second video. However be happy if you are able to upload a video that is longer than a minute in less than a few hours as well.

With its drag-and-drop functionality, ability to watch the video while uploading, progress bar, and its speed, Gen is the winner. I was also thinking that it could also be that the site is not as busy as Youtube and Facebook, so that is probably another reason it’s so quick. However, even if this were the case, the extra functions that Geni has, makes it the winner by far.
